Frequently asked questions
Direct cremation means your loved one is cremated in the days immediately following the death, without a viewing or funeral service beforehand. Direct cremations provide an affordable and timely alternative to traditional funerals, and are now preferred by us much as 35% of Australians.
Yes, Light Cremations prides itself on simple, transparent pricing. The direct cremation price advertised is fixed. We don't charge extra for oversized coffins, pacemaker removal or anything else.
No, you don't have to pay upfront. We won't request payment until after the cremation has been booked, and we offer a number of different payment options - including paying for the service directly from your loved one's estate.
Absolutely. While we do have a digital platform available for you, our team is here 24/7 and we can absolutely support you the traditional way (via phone call and email) if that is your preference. Please let us know your preferred way to communicate when you contact us for the first time.
After a loved one passes, their body will be taken directly into our care (or the care of our partners) for preparation for the cremation. The body is prepared and placed in either a basic wooden coffin or cardboard casket for the cremation to take place. We will arrange all of the paperwork, including the Doctor's medical certificate, cremation permit, registration of the death and official BDM death certificate before the cremation can occur. After cremation, the ashes of your loved one are returned to you in a temporary, but secure, urn.
The timing of collection depends on where the passing occurs. If your loved one has passed away at home, we will aim to be there within 2 hours. If they passed away at an aged care facility or hospital, we will collect as soon as possible, pending the hospital or aged care home availability. If your loved one is taken to the Coroner, we will collect after the Coroner enquiry has been completed, which can take more than a week.
We generally advise families that the timing from collection to return of ashes is 10 days. However, it can vary depending on how quickly documentation is returned along with appropriate clearances from institutions (hospitals, coroners etc). If you would like your loved one's ashes back in a particular timeframe, please let us know and we'll do our best to accommodate.
The process to ensure this happens is closely regulated. Before cremation, an ID number is assigned and stamped on a metal disk – this then accompanies your loved one throughout the cremation process. Although this is a common fear, there are many safeguards in place to ensure this does not happen.
There's no right way, only your way.
When it comes to staying goodbye, there's no right way to do it. A cremation-only service with Light Cremations gives you the flexibility to say goodbye the way that is right for you.
For some, that's an ashes scattering ceremony in a hot air balloon. For others, it's a backyard barbeque with family and friends.
For some, it's nothing at all. Whatever goodbye looks like for you, Light Cremations is here to help.
