We are offering transparent and personalised cremations. We recognise that traditional funeral homes may be hesitant to embrace change after years of following a certain approach. And we don’t blame them - it’s hard to adjust to the changes after decades of doing the same thing. But like so much in life, it’s time to adapt and grow.

The perception of direct cremation is changing. More and more people are understanding the appeal of an affordable direct cremation, as it allows them to organise a memorial, farewell, or celebration of life in their own time. Nobody deserves to be forced into an unnecessarily expensive traditional funeral if that’s not what they want.

Despite our affordability, we don’t compromise on quality of care.

Cost doesn’t equal quality of care.

One criticism traditional funeral homes like to use towards our online model is “you get what you pay for”. As if by choosing a direct cremation for your loved one, it means you’re compromising on quality, care and dignity your loved one deserves.

The incredible care and dedication given from our beautiful customer team is free of charge, whereas the more traditional funeral homes, despite their exorbitant prices, seem to forget that care should be the foundation of what this business is all about.

The affordable alternative to the traditional funeral model.

Traditional funeral directors often talk about the necessary expenses and costs of a funeral. But for many, the most appropriate way to say goodbye doesn’t include spending $10,000 on a coffin, or feeling stretched thin to cover the costs.

Light Cremations was born from our own negative experiences within funerals and the urge to disrupt an industry in desperate need of change and reform.

Almost a third (32%) of seniors report some form of financial hardship after paying for a funeral, according to the Australian Seniors Cost of Death report. Funeral homes reportedly attempt to upsell at every corner, ignoring customer pleas for an affordable option. Telling people that they will “get what they pay for” for an unattended cremation will only put more people in debt and financial hardship.

This is why it’s so important to have options. Many people still value traditional funerals and they definitely hold an important place for some to mourn, but that’s not for everyone. By empowering consumers with all the options available to them and allowing them the freedom to make a decision that aligns to their values, we can work to reduce stress and tension during what is already an extremely difficult time.

The overheads of running a traditional funeral home.

At Light, our online model means we’re not spending money on setting up locations across Australia and instead we pass the savings onto you

Funeral homes need to spend on rent on setting up various locations, plus hearses, embalming equipment, and other various expenses associated with burials and traditional funerals. Whilst they absorb the cost of some of these expenses, keep an eye out for the cost of a coffin or casket. This is where the extreme markups come into play, as they could be charging 10-20 times more than what they paid for it.

The difference - what makes a good funeral director?

Sometimes it’s hard to know what to look for in a funeral director and service. What qualities make a good funeral director? How do I know that the cost reflects the services provided?

At Light, we pride ourselves on our genuine care, compassion, transparency and support. For every step of the process, we are there with a helping hand. And when the dust has settled and it’s been a couple of months since your loved one has passed away, we’ll pop up and check in on you. Because we know grief is a process and journey that shouldn’t be weathered alone.

We want to empower our customers to talk candidly about death - because when we don’t, it only amplifies our grief and makes the process of losing someone all that more difficult, from planning a funeral to working through their estate and probate.

If you’re searching around for a funeral director or providor, often the initial conversation will help you gauge whether or not they’re for you.

It’s also good to think about their tone, demeanour, and the level of care given in that initial conversation. Losing a loved one and experiencing grief is incredibly challenging, and it’s even more difficult to go through the motions with a funeral director when all you might want to do is let your grief consume you and curl up in a ball and cry. The last thing you need is to work with somebody who isn’t compassionate and doesn’t have your best interests at heart.
